Meet the Artist ~ PinkiePerfectDolls

What is your name?

Naomi (or Nomi)

Where are you from?

London, UK

Age?

27 years old

How long have you been customizing?

10 months

What got you started?

I was suffering from anxiety and used customs to alleviate this and give me something positive to focus on :)

What types of customs do you do?

I started off with Disney Animator dolls (they're just so cute!) and moved on to Monster High and Ever after High dolls about 6 months ago because I can do more with them. I mostly do cute and pretty customs with the occasional horror doll :P

What sorts of mediums do you use?

Mostly watercolour pencils and Mr SuperClear with a little bit of soft pastel. I've just started rerooting and getting used to using fibres and I love Retro Dolls hair <3 The brands I use are; Inktense Derwent watercolour pencils, PanPastels and any heavy body acrylic paint. I use really expensive products these days but I started with very basic ones and you can get just as intense colours from them- it just takes longer and I'm lazy!

Are there any products you just can’t live without?

Mr SuperClear! I've only just started using it instead of Plastikote Matt and the difference is astounding! Also, a really good pencil sharpener....

What is your most favorite custom that you have made?

this is my favourite monster high one- she was made for Shannon's Lolita swap and I love her and her hair so much <3

What is your least favorite custom that you have made?

she just didn't turn out how I wanted her to... it was my first time fitting acrylic eyes and she ended up permanently cross-eyed!

A lot of beginners get so frustrated when their customs don't come out the way they want them to, and often compare themselves to their favorite artists and give up. Can you show us your very first custom?

My first Animator custom :S the main thing I've learned is not to use permanent marker as a short cut!!!

What is your most recent custom?

What is the worst injury you’ve had from working on customs?

I've been quite lucky and haven't hurt myself too badly- I've stabbed my finger with a felting needle which hurt for 3 days and burned my hands melting the glue out of doll hair in boiling water but nothing too serious!

Who/What inspires you?

Other doll artists :) Doll people are the loveliest! Honestly, completing my first Retro Dolls swap introduced me to a much wider circle of customisers and their work, advice and support has been amazing- including the wonderful Shannon!

What projects are you currently working on?

About 7! I've got a Christmas project underway, a giveaway, a magic doll swap, a tightrope walker and a zombie... busy, busy! I'm trying to do far more reroots so projects are taking longer.

Do you have any odd habits while working on customs?

Watching Judge Judy!!! Also talking to the dolls as I work on them... also I won't leave them on their own without other dolls just in case Toy Story is real (I don't want them to be lonely?!)

What types of art do you enjoy?

Cute art! I'm a sucker for slightly quirky art- particularly traditional art as I'm a traditional artist myself. I like seeing unique pieces. I also did fine art at A-level so I love some of the old masters too, Caravaggio and Van Gogh

Do you take commissions?

Yes! I haven't worked on a commission yet and I'd LOVE one!

Where can people see your work and contact you?

Umm... ok... Instagram: PinkiePerfectDolls,

Etsy: Pinkie Perfect Draws,

DeviantArt: Pinkie-Perfect,

Email: pinkieperfectproducts@gmail.com

YouTube: Work in progress!

Do you have any favorite tips or tricks?

Probably nothing new, but if you use pencils over the top of pastels the colour is much more vibrant than if you just start with the pencils. Finish washing, cutting, rerooting etc before you try to do the face-up so that you don't damage it.

Any advice for people just starting out? Don't give up! Don't compare yourself! Keep experimenting and watch every YouTube tutorial you can lay your eyes on! Have fun :D
