Meet the Artist ~ Mozekyto

What is your name?

Gail Hermoso (Mozekyto)

Where are you from?

The Philippines!

Age?

I'm 26 turning 27 years old this December!

How long have you been customizing?

I started customizing dolls Spring/Summer last year.

What got you started?

I've always loved BJDs and the art of doing faceups but never tried it myself since I don't have a doll. It was when I saw Andreja (Nicolle's Dreams) and many other awesome artists like Raquel Clemente, Hextian and Dollightful give Monster High and Ever After High dolls BJD-like faceups, that I immediately bought a few dolls (since they're relatively cheaper than BJDs) and gave it a go!

What types of customs do you do?

Since I am still exploring with customizing dolls myself, I don't think I have a specific theme or type. But currently, mostly cute?

What sorts of medium do you use?

Watercolor pencils and soft pastels.

Are there any products you just can't live without?

Probably my sealant (Vallejo Acryllic Matte Varinish) since I don't think I can make customs without it!

What is your most favorite custom that you have made?

My Valentines Cupid! It holds the most sentimental value to me since its a doll with a lot of "firsts"!

What is your least favorite custom that you have made?

Maybe my Adventure Time's Marceline since I felt I could do better.

A lot of beginners get so frustrated when their customs don't come out the way they want them to, and often compare themselves to their favorite artists and give up. Can you show us your very first custom?

Back then I don't even know how to sew. So all my customs were naked!

What is your most recent custom?

Adventure Time's Princess Bubblegum!

What is the worst injury you’ve had from working on customs?

A broken heart when things don't go the way I want it? Haha!

Who/What inspires you?

As to who, I look up to a LOT of doll artist and I've mentioned a few already. The hobby is filled with extremely creative and talented people you don't have to look hard to meet one! As to what, my love for dolls and the craft motivates and inspires me to keep creating fun and cute characters because it really makes me happy.

What projects are you currently working on?

A few more Adventure Time dolls and a special collab doll! I am also actively searching for base dolls to start of a Steven Universe custom series!

Do you have any odd habits while working on customs?

I have a pretty bad eyesight so when I'm not filming, I draw faces in a sitting fetal position.

What types of art do you enjoy?

My former boss got me into Calligraphy back then and even if I'm not good I enjoy doing it and find it therapeutic.

Do you take commissions?

Not at the moment.

Where can people see your work and contact you?

Do you have any favorite tips or tricks?

Buy those pointy Qtips! Its such a useful tool and it will help you achieve cleaner lines!

Any advice for people just starting out?

Be patient and practice!

Artist grade materials, although a bit more expensive will help ease out the learning process so accumulate stuff little by little.

There will be a lot of frustrating moments but keep going since you'll never know what you're capable of if you give up!

And don't care too much about what people will say! If you're happy and you're not hurting or offending anyone then everyone will just have to deal.
