Meet the Artist ~ Katalin Szabó-Varga

What is your name?

- My name is Katalin Szabó-Varga (UNNiEDOLLS)

Where are you from?

- I'm from Transylvania (it is in Romania)

Age?

- I was born in 1989 September 20, so I'm 28 years old right now:)

How long have you been customizing?

- I started to customize dolls in 2014.

What got you started?

- I started to sew dolls in 2012, then I created clay dolls and BJD dolls. During this time I discovered the customized dolls and I wanted to try to customize a doll too. My first doll was a Draculaura.

What types of customs do you do?

- I'm customizing Monster High, Ever After High and Blythe dolls

What sorts of mediums do you use?

Mr. Super Clear Uv Cut spray sealant and Tamya gloss on mouth.

Are there any products you just can’t live without?

- There is many!:) Every product which I use is a MUST!

What is your most favorite custom that you have made?

What is your least favorite custom that you have made?

- I don't know exactly... I don't like my early works because it wasn't neat and beautiful enough.

A lot of beginners get so frustrated when their customs don't come out the way they want them to, and often compare themselves to their favorite artists and give up. Can you show us your very first custom?

- Sure!

What is your most recent custom?

- My most recent custom is Cleo de Nile. She has blonde, creamy hair. This hair inspired me to create the rest of her look.

What is the worst injury you’ve had from working on customs?

- I poke my hands and fingers many times. I'm wearing an adhesive bandage on my forefinger right now :O

Who/What inspires you?

- Everything can inspire me. A song, a movie, a color combo, a hair style, the weather... or my mood.

What projects are you currently working on?

- I'm working on the Suicide Squad's Harley Quinn right now:)

Do you have any odd habits while working on customs?

- I don't think I have. I'm usually watching movies or listening to music.

What types of art do you enjoy? - I like very realistic dolls or fantasy/kawaii dolls.

Do you take commissions?

- I don't take commissions right now.

Where can people see your work and contact you?

Do you have any favorite tips or tricks?

- If you want a really colorful repaint, then don"t afraid to apply the colours in layers. 1 layer paint, 1 layer sealant, 1 layer paint, 1 layer sealant... so you can build up every color with this technique. Also... don't be afraid to use an eraser:)

Any advice for people just starting out?

- Be patient and don't panic if your first custom doesn't be as good as you imagined before. Keep practicing and try out different techniques to find which fit you best.
